An apparatus for conveying substantially flat articles is disclosed, The apparatus comprises the combination of a conveyor having a support surface for supporting flat articles transported by the conveyor, a vacuum chamber positioned adjacent the conveyor and having a face substantially flush with the support surface and apertures through the face adapted to be covered by a flat article conveyed over the face by the conveyor. The article is held against the face by a vacuum within the chamber. An obturator overlies the face of the vacuum chamber to close the aperture in the absence of an article covering the face. The obturator is adapted to be moved out of its overlying relationship with the face in response to movement of a flat article into a position between the face and the obturator, In a preferred embodiment, the obturator is a spring steel element. |
