In concentrating an aq. acrylamide soln from 50% acrylamide by flash evapn. of water from the soln. at less than atmos. pressure in appts. having stainless steel surfaces, the improvement is that the conc soln. contains 5-200 ppm Cu (II) ion (on acrylamide) as Cu (II) salt and the pH of the soln is =5. Pref. the Cu (II) salt is CuSO4 and the pH is maintained by addn. of H2SO4. Use of the Cu (II) salt inhibits the polymerisation of acrylamide during concn. of its soln. and maintaining the soln. at pH =5, pptn. of Cu basic salt and the corrosion of the stainless steel surfaces is also inhibited.
