3-Phenoxybenzaldehyde is used as an intermediate in the production of pyrethroid esters. To improve the yield, it is prepared by the following steps: (a) treating a mixture of 3-phenoxybenzyl and 3-phenoxybenzal halides with hexamethylenetetramine in the presence of a solvent and hydrolysing the resulting product to form 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde; (b) removing the solvent from the reaction mixture obtained in step (a); (c) treating the residue from step (b) with a hydrocarbon solvent comprising essentially one or more alkanes and/or one or more cycloalkanes, to form a hydrocarbon phase comprising 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde, and (d) washing the hydrocarbon phase with an aqueous solution of a strong acid.
