The component is formed from two separate elements (1, 2) mechanically pressed into contact with one another at at least three separate points (5). Each of these points (5) has an area of 1x 10-2 sq. cm or less. The two elements (1, 2) are in the form of two flat discs or rectangular plates and an electrical voltage (4) is coupled across them. The contacting surfaces of one or both of them may have a number of spaced raised areas or a grid or raised ridges, which define the contact points. Both elements (1, 2) may be metal, at least one may be a monocrystalline semiconductor, at least one may be ferromagnetic, both may be superconductive, or at least one may be optically transparent.
