Such a device for preventing water hammer has a diaphragm (16) of flexible material which is clamped between the extension of a cover (10) and the shoulder (17) of a bush (18) and the free edge of which lies between a valve seating surface (15) of the bush (18) and the conical surface (45) of a back-up ring (44) loaded by a spring (46). The water flowing in via an inlet passage (2) flows via an opening (3) past a noise-damping hose piece (5), along the valve seating surface (15) and into the housing passage (32). The back-up ring (44) prevents the wear and deformation of the diaphragm (16) since, as it is lifted off from the valve seating surface (15), it slides on the conical surface (45) of the back-up ring (44) without risk of damage. <IMAGE>
