A gear mechanism (7) is mounted on the horizontal cross member (3) of a U-shaped yoke (2) and drives a vertical ram (9). A pressing plate (2) is fastened at the lower end of the ram (9) and compresses the rubbish in the container (21). Horizontal strips (24, 25) project on the mutually facing sides of the limbs (4, 5) of the yoke (2), engage under the bead (22) of the rubbish container (21) and support the yoke (2) as the rubbish is compressed. The press is inexpensive, easily transportable and can be easily mounted on and released from commercially available rubbish containers. <IMAGE>
