An adhesive in the form of a hardened synthetic material of a type which can be softened by heating, is applied between a workpiece and a supporting surface to fix the workpiece in place. Pref. the adhesive is an epoxy resin with a tensile strength of 275 kg/cm2. Pref. before the workpiece is placed in the adhesive, a strip form heating element is located suitably. Used to remedy the contradiction between the need to have an adhesive capable of holding the workpiece so that machining etc., can be carried out rapidly, and the releasing of the workpiece when the operations are concluded.
