PURPOSE:To prepare the title compound useful as an antiozonant and a stabilizer of elastomers, in high selectivity, by the reduction alkylation of p-aminodiphenylamine in the presence of a specific amount of water and a Pt catalyst containing a specific amount of supported Pt. CONSTITUTION:An N-alkyl-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (e.g. N-isopropyl-N'- phenyl-p-phenylenediamine) is prepared by the reductive alkylation reaction of p- aminodiphenylamine with a ketone and hydrogen, in the presence of (A) 1.0- 4.0wt%, based on p-aminodiphenylamine, of a Pt catalyst containing 0.5-4.0wt% of supported Pt, and (B) 20-200wt%, based on the Pt catalyst, of water. The selectivity of the Pt catalyst is increased (e.g. 99mol% yield), and the catalytic activity is improved. |
