Prodn. of Na and K alkoxides (I) is carried out by reacting a mixt. of CaO, 1-6C alcohol (II) and anhydrous NaOH or KOH to form the corresp. (I) and Ca(OH)2. (II) is pref. MeOH, polyhydroxyalcohol or an aminoalcohol. Excess CaO is pref. used and part of this is left in the soln to protect (I) from atmos. decompsn.
