The electric motor comprises a stator (12) including a magnetic core (16, 18, 20, 22), a main stator winding (24), a rotor (14), a voltage source not shown, joined to an input (26) connected in series via a capacitor (28) to the stator winding (24). The capacitor (28) has sufficient capacitance for the voltage at which it is charged, added to the alternating voltage, multiplied by the time for which the total voltage is applied to the stator winding (24) to succeed in saturating the core (16, 18, 20, 22) in opposite directions with each half-cycle of the alternating voltage. To increase the efficiency of the motor, the latter furthermore includes an adjustment winding (36), coiled on the stator (12), and the assembly comprises a control current generator connected into this winding (36) at its input (38). This device makes it possible to control the flux in the stator core and thus to vary within this core the principal flux available for the proper operation of the motor, in such a way that, whether operation is off-load or full-load, the flux of the core periodically assumes oppositely directed levels of saturation. <IMAGE>
