An area of soil for agricultural use is irrigated by burying underground a spaced plurality of tubular pipes 3 which communicate at their ends with water-supply conduits 4. The system is not pressurized but the side walls of the pipes are sufficiently porous that capilliary forces in the ambient soil draw water from the tubular pipes through said walls to replace water taken up by plants growing in the said soil. Suitably each pipe is formed of a plurality of flexibly interconnected portions. Advantageously, the pipes are made by baking clay having combustible matter dispersed therein so that upon incineration of said material pores are formed within the baked clay.

|
