A transport system comprises vehicles 3, Fig. 1, movable on pressurized-fluid cushions 5, 6, on a track 2 supported on pylons 14, the top surface of the track 2 being curved and concave and of a width substantially greater than that of a vehicle 3 and wherein the undersurface of each vehicle is provided with longitudinally extending flexible ribs 7 which confine the fluid cushions laterally of the vehicle and the free edges of the ribs lie on a convex geometrical surface 7a of the same or substantially the same radius of curvature as that of the track 2, whereby the vehicle is free to move transversely on the track and to assume thereon a position dependent upon the forces exerted on the vehicle, e.g. when on a curve Fig. 3 (not shown) or due to wind. The vehicle 3 has an air compressor 8 connected,by ducts 9 to a chamber 10 in turn connected by holes 11 to the cushions 5 and 6. Propulsion is effected by a rear mounted air screw 12. The track is provided with safety fences 15 and where tunnels are necessary, the track may consist of a cylindrical tube. The pylons 14 may be canted, where the track is tightly curved, as described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown). |
