N-phosphonometyl glycine(I), useful as herbicides and plant growth regulators, was prepd. by oxidation of N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid(II in aq. medium with H2O2 or air in the presence of a catalyst such as Pt/C or Rh/C. Thus, a mixt. of 13.7 g N-(Phosphonomethyl)iminodiazetic acid, 20 ml H2O and 6.0 g conco sulfuric acid was stirred at 82-87≦̸C dropwise 23 ml 30 %-H202 for 2 hr to give 7.8 g N-phosphonamethyl glycine.
