PURPOSE:To provide a spacing to fiber ends at the coupling and protect end faces by encircling the circumference of the optical fiber at the plug end part by the steel balls and fixing the same by adhesive material then polishing the end thereby letting the optical fiber end retreat from the steel balls. CONSTITUTION:A plug sleeve 7 which is made larger in inside diameter at the ends is put on an optical fiber 1 and a number of steel balls 8 of the same diameter are so inserted into the end as to encircle the fiber 1 and are fixed by adhesive material 3. Thence, the end face of the plug 7 is polished to the structure in which the steel balls 8, sleeve 7, optical fiber 1 and adhesive material 3 are retreated in this order. In this way, the end of the optical fiber 1 encircled by the steel balls 8 is so constructed as to be retreated several mu from the end of the plug 7. When this plug 7 is opposedly fitted to a fitting sleeve 6, the end faces of the optical fibers 1 themselves always have a spacing of several mu even if the plugs 5, 5' are pushed together, thus the end faces of the optical fibers 1 are held protected. |
