Equipment for the destruction of information on filmed documents, esp. microfines, (micro)-film, photographs, paper prints and photocopies, has a sealed housing with a slit for introducing the document completely, a seal for this slit and opt. an attachment for introducing a suitable amt. of an active soln. for the destruction of the document. Suitable solns. are as follows- (1) solns. which dissolve the image Ag or reversal or redn. baths, esp. a soln. of (a) KMnO4 and H2SO4, (b) K2Cr2O7 and H2SO4 or Nacl or (c) Ce sulphate and H2SO4; (2) solns. which remove gelatin, esp. (a') A naCOl soln. or (b') a wealky alkaline soln. contg. a proteolytic enzyme; (3) A solvent for cellulose esters, e.g. benzyl alcohol, and opt. an acid and opt. and alcohol; or (4) An emulsion of benzyl alcohol and water and water-insol. (vegetable) gum. The information is destroyed without causing environmental pollution.
