The load handling vehicle with lifting forks (6) uses a system of scissor linkages forming a lazy tongs system to raise the lifting forks from ground level to an upper level where the scissor linkages form a nearly vertical column. The action is controlled by further levers (19, 20, 21) forming a Z shape between a point (23) behind the forks and another point (27) at the rear of the vehicle structure (1). The forward lever (20) forms an extension of the piston rod of an actuator cylinder (26). A second cylinder (33) above this is connected with a short lever (28) which forms with it and a lever (29) at the rear, a second 'Z'-shape. The outer end of the latter is connected at a point (30) further rearwards on the vehicle structure.
