The arrangement (10) is intended for coupling a trailer (12) to a towing vehicle. A downward S-shaped coupling bar (16) on the vehicle has a rearwardly projecting coupling tongue (22) which engages a jaw (24) at the forward end fo the trailer where it automatically locks on. The end of the tongue carries at least one shaped (54) projection (52) which is engaged by a corresponding latch (46, 48) in the jaw. The projection (52) may be arranged on the upper side of the tongue with the latch near the top of the jaw opening. The projection may have a contoured face (54) behind which a hooked portion (48) of the latch grips.
