In a process for the loss-free storage of grains and seeds, esp. cereals, pulses and food- and feedstuffs consisting essentially of seeds, there is generated in a storage space which is substantially air-tightly sealed from the outside an atmosphere of controlled composition which has an elevated CO2 content and an artificially reduced O2 content relative to normal air composition. In a plant the process, the storage space is connected to a device for generating an atmosphere of the desired compsn. Technically simple method gives rapid killing of animal pests (e.g. insects) and elimination or at least inhibition of microorganisms such as moulds without the use of toxic gases. In addn., the modified atmosphere retards biochemical processes taking place in the stored prods., giving reduced decompsn. and prolonging storage life. The reduced metabolic rate results in a reduced loss of moisture and aroma components. |
