The measuring wheel is hinged to a spindle parallel to the strand and runs along one side of the strand. The spindle is offset relative to the side of the strand to ensure that the centre of gravity causes the wheel to be urged firmly against the side. This device checks the length along the neutral fibre of the strand which suffers less distortion and furnishes more accurate results.
