The kitchen unit working surface incorporates a cooker or sink set into a hole in the surface, and is e.g. of coated chipboard. The edge surface (9) of the unit (5) is flat, and is joined flush with the upper surface of the plate (10). Between the outer circumference of the unit, and the inner circumference of the hole (4) is a gap (13) which is plugged with filler (15) which is poured in and goes underneath the edge (9) of the unit (5) and/or the working top (1). The underneath side of the edge of the unit has a reinforcement strip extending into the hole.
