Torch cutting carriage for continuously cast strands - with support pad exerting adjustable coupling force

The torch cutting carriage for a continuously cast strand of metal runs on rails above the horizontal strand with three wheels. A central support pad is urged against the top of the strand to couple the torch cutting carriage to it during the flame cutting operation. The force exerted by the support pad is controlled and held to the desired value. This limits the support force to one which is just enough to carry along the carriage without lifting its wheels off the rails. The reduced force eliminates damage to the cast strand.
