In the manufacture of synthetic gas, especially synthetic ammonia, in which a feed gas containing one or more hydrocarbons undergoes primary and secondary reforming by means of water vapour, in particular, and in which the heat necessary to the secondary reforming is generated upon the introduction of oxygen-containing gas into the reaction gas mixture prior to the secondary reforming, high thermodynamic efficiency and low capital expenditure can be achieved where the quantity of heat generated in the secondary reforming is used to deliver the quantity of heat necessary to drive the primary reforming. A manufacturing plant for the synthetic gas comprises a pipe 1 for feed gas, a primary reforming reactor P, a pipe 2 for conveying gas from the reactor P to a secondary reforming reactor S, a supply pipe 3 for oxygen- containing gas, a pipe 4 for conducting product gas from S to P for heat exchange with the feed gas, and an outlet pipe 5 for product gas. <IMAGE>
