In the screw extrusion of thermoplastic synthetic resins, the heat supply to at least the first section of a melting zone 3 is controlled independently of the temperature control of the zone following the melting zone whilst the wall of the extrusion cylinder 4 is maintained at a constant temperature in this following metering zone the heat supply to the melting zone 3 being controlled to keep the extrusion screw 1 at the same temperature at the beginning and end 23, 24. respectively, of the metering zone. The apparatus is provided with external electrical heating elements 14-21 and thermocouples 23, 24, contained in a sheath inside the extrusion screw 1, connected to indicating and/or control means (not shown) to maintain the temperatures at the beginning and end of the metering zone. Means (not shown) for cooling the cylinder 4 by an air stream are also provided. |
