The invention comprises water-soluble compounds of formula [Q-X-CH2-NR3]+anion-, where X is -CONH-, -O-, -S-or-CO2- and R is C1- 6 alkyl, or NR2 or NR3 constitute a C5 or C6 N-heterocyclic ring; Q is a C3- 21/t aliphatic radical in which 70-100% of the H atoms are replaced by F and the terminal group is CHF2 or CF3. These compounds are prepared by reacting Q-XH with paraformaldehyde, NR3 and an acid providing the anion-. The preparation of pentadecafluorooctanamidomethyl pyridinium acetate is exemplified.ALSO:Compounds which are stated to convert the -OH group in cellulosic textiles to -O-CH2-X-Q, have the formula [Q-X-CH2-NR3]+ Anion-, where X is -CONH-, -O-, -S- or -CO2- and R is C1- 6 alkyl, or NR2 or NR3 constitute a C5 or C6 N-heterocyclic ring; Q is a C3- 21 aliphatic radical in which 70-100% of the H atoms are replaced by F and the terminal group is CHF2 or CF3. Pentadecafluorooctanamidomethyl pyridium acetate is specified.ALSO:Textiles are made water-repellent, oil-repellent, stain-resistant and able to shed oily particulate soil by treatment with a compound of formula [Q-X-CH2-NR3]+ Anion-, where X is -CONH-, -O-, -S- or -CO2- and R is C1-6 alkyl, or NR2 or NR3 constitute a C5 or C6 N-heterocyclic ring; Q is a C3-21 aliphatic radical in which 70-100% of the H atoms are replaced by F and the terminal group in CHF2 or CF3. Pentadecafluorooctonamidomethyl pyridinum acetate is specified. The textiles may be fibres, yarns, woven fabrics or felted materials made of cotton, regenerated cellulose, wool, nylon, fibreglass, acrylics or polyesters or generally all textiles having a negative charge.
