A motor (M) can be controlled by a phase-gating controller (10) and a time-delay element (20). Once the switch (S) has been switched on, the motor (M) is provided with a reduced power for the crawling speed if the switching contact of the relay (Re) is open first of all. Once the relay (Re) has pulled-in in a delayed manner and its switching contact has closed, the motor (M) is supplied with an electrical power which corresponds to the position set on the potentiometer (P1). Such an arrangement ensures smooth starting of the motor (M), which is provided for an electric tool, as a result of which a high switching-on current surge and excessive mechanical stress on the tool and on the workpieces to be processed are avoided. <IMAGE>
