The cotter pin (10) may be used on telescopic tubular scaffolding posts or props, inc. a retractable pivot bolt (12) which prevents accidental pin removal. The bolt (12) takes the form of a rectangular plate which is located in a diametric slot (13) which opens out on the leading pin tip. A diametric axle (15) secures the bolt in the slot. The bolt, pivots to retract completely into the slot to allow a sliding retraction of the pin. It is retrained in the retracted position under gravity when the acute angled corner is uppermost, and similarly pivots into the active position if the pin is twisted through 180 deg.
