PURPOSE:To reduce speed change shock by feedback controlling the engaging force of a friction element with changing-over of an electromagnetic means so that the current revolving speed will be identical to the target value at every control cycle in speed change process. CONSTITUTION:During speed change by an automatic transmission, the target rate of change for the input shaft revolving speed is determined by a target rate-of-change setting means C on the basis of the amount of change in the input shaft revolving speed of a transmission mechanism 10, and according thereto a target revolving speed setting means D sets the target revolving speed at every control cycle in speed changing. A drive control means E changes over an electromagnetic means A from the on to off condition and vice versa on the basis of the deviation of the current revolving speed sensed by a sensing means B, and the engaging force of a friction element of transmission mechanism 10 is adjusted to make feedback control, wherein no duty computation or the like is required. Thus speed change shocks are reduced by simple control means.
