A control unit is for an intermittent excitation laser as used in medical applications. A detector is placed in the laser beam so that a count or total energy value can be used as a threshold for switching off the source. The detector is a partially reflecting mirror which reflects 10% at most, and usually 2 to 5%, of the laser beam into the photodetector.
