The control unit for a model aircraft or boat, comprises a hand-held housing (10) with at least one aperture (15), into which one of several different manual operating control devices (11-14) can be inserted. Each of these devices (11-14) has a different mechanical and electrical configuration but is of the same size and has similar outputs coupled to the inputs of a coding circuit within the control unit, via which it is connected to the control circuits. Pref. the control unit has a HF circuit which is also provided as an inter changeable module. The control unit allows the complexity and type of control exerted over the model vehicle to be varied, e.g. in dependence on the skill of the operator.
