A kit for the identification of microorganisms, is made up of a plate 10 subdivided into several compartments A, B at least some of which B contain a solid medium 13 on which a microorganism can grow after the addition of one or more nutrients and at least one of which A preferably contains a solid medium containing all the nutrients necessary for microorganism growth, and a variety of different solid tablets supplying the nutrient(s) lacking from the media in the compartments B in a variety of ways. The morphology of the microorganism to be identified is studied in compartment A and its metabolism when presented with a variety of different candidate nutrients, usually in the tablets, is studied in the compartments B, these compartments preferably being used merely to study carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism and its reaction to the urease test. <IMAGE>
