The circular knitting machine is provided with vertically movable sinkers (6) which are arranged alternately with the plate needles (4) and which are aligned with the vertical cylinder needles (2). The thread, which has just been presented by a respective plate needle, can thus be held at a specific point by the adjacent sinker, when the plate needle is moved forwards, in order to catch a thread for looping and, when the corresponding cylinder needle is moved downwards, in order to take off a closed or cut loop. Uniform patterns of constant quality can thereby be knitted. <IMAGE>
