The swinging movement of an impact hammer (70) is limited at the top by means of a bell (10) and at the bottom by means of a key (1) which can be pivoted about the edge of a shoulder (16). A plurality of keyboard instruments of this type are arranged one next to the other and are thus combined to form a single instrument, the bells being tuned to one another. In the basic position shown, the impact hammer (70) rests on the rear end of the key in such a manner that the horizontal distance between the support point (30) and the centre of gravity (S) of the impact hammer is small in comparison with the path radius (R) of this centre of gravity, i.e. less than 20% of the path radius. By this means, a virtually transmission-free transmitting of the key stroke to the movement of the centre of gravity of the impact hammer is achieved. The bearing forces and the stressing of the movable parts are thus low and the instrument is very robust. <IMAGE>
