Pre-purifying 1,2-di:chloroethane with ferric chloride catalyst - by washing with aq. acid, esp. in a rotary pump

Method for pre-purifing 1,2-dichloethane (I) in association with its prodn. from C2H4 and Cl2 in presence of anhydrous FECl3 as catalyst, comprises mixing the reaction prod. with an aq. phase i.e. 20% HCl of pH 1 (pref.0.5). Pref. the mixing takes place in a rotary pump. The catalyst is completely removed so that a sharp and quick sepn. between aq. and (I)-contg. phases is achieved without problems of emulsification. This reduces energy demand in the subsequent dewatering column and avoids blockage of the appts. by Fe(OH)3.
