IC engine cooling pump - uses exhaust heat in stirling cycle to move displacement plunger and pump diaphragm with liquid as coolant

The liquid-cooled combustion engine (1) has its exhaust manifold (2) thermally coupled (6) to the hot side (4) of a housing (5) containing the displacement plunger (8) of an externally heated Stirling cycle engine. The plunger is carried on a spring (9) so that it moves to and fro. The cold side is formed by a diaphragm (10) which forms the closure of the housing (5) and is in direct contact with the engine (1) coolant (12). Inlet and outlet to the diaphragm are controlled by non-return valves (15, 16) so that the assembly acts as a coolant pump. The diaphragm may be coupled to the armature (19) of an oscillating-armature generator.
