The packing system is for palletless load units of piece goods, using a sling formed by an endless belt with easily accessible lashing loops and other loops for lifting. The sling is transported with the unit. The lifting loops are engaged by hooks (5) spaced apart in the horizontal direction and movable towards each other, leaving the lashing loops (7, 8) free. The side portions of the sling (H) are held in the open position while the items are stacked to form a load on a centra baseplate provided on the sling. The hooks are then moved together, pulling the sling tight round the load, and the lashing loops are then secured together.
