Recovery of CO and H2 from gases contg. these and other constituents (CH4, Ar, N2 or C2H6) involves cooling under pressure, partial liquefaction, rectification and scrubbing. The gaseous fraction left after partial liquefaction is transferred to a scrubber operating with liquid N2, H2 being taken from the top, whilst (pt. of) the liquefied fraction is passed to a one-stage rectifier. The top fraction from the rectifier and (pt. of) the sump fraction with the N2 scrubber are passed to the high pressure zone of a double rectifier and the top fraction from this zone is passed into the low pressure zone, where CO is withdrawn from the sump. The claims also cover the equipment used. CO and H2 can be recovered from gases of widely varying compsn., as well as cracked gas from a steam reformer. H2 can be obtd. in different purities at different levels of the scrubber, e.g. very pure H2 suitable for butanol synthesis and less pure H2 and NH3 synthesis.
|
