An improved magnetic separator of the type wherein a continuous conveying member passes between a superposed magnetic assembly and a quantity of unseparated materials. non-magnetic, metallic cylindrical rotating drum or wheel incorporates a magnetic assembly including an electromagnet and permanent magnets which are arranged to obtain a long "carry" of the metal particles suspended from the drum whereby entrained non-magnetic materials are enabled to fall away and a highly efficient and complete separation is effected.
