1,096,722. Oil filter. M. E. L. EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. May 16, 1966 [June 11, 1965], No. 24761/65. Heading B1D. An annular filter element 6 is mounted on an annular valve member 8, which normally seats on annular seat 16 between inlet 2 and outlet 3 but which is moved therefrom by increasing pressure across element 6, exerted on element end closure plate 9, against the action of disc springs 19 to allow by-passing of the filter element. Valve member 8 comprises an integral spider 12, through which oil normally leaves the central space of element 6, and a circumferential channel 18 bridged by axial ribs 17 engaging seat 16, between which ribs the by-pass flow occurs. Attached to valve member 8 by tie-rod 11 is a preliminary magnetic filter 5 and a sleeve 22 supporting springs 19. Open ended sleeve 4 is urged by spring 12a against member 8. Sleeve 4 and filter 5 move with element 6 and member 8 during by-passing. The element 6 may be pleated felt or paper. In Figure 2 (not shown) magnetic filter 5 is located downstream of filter element 6 and is slidably retained on spindles (34), (40), for easy removal from the movable assembly of filter elements and valve member on opening the housing 1.
