<p>The vehicle impact fense may be used on central highway reserves or on verges at hazard locations, acting to prevent an errant vehicle from leaving a designated carriageway, and absorbing impact energy. The fence comprises horizontal rails (5) mounted on the front face of vertical posts (4), the rails and posts being of a hollow circular section or similar in slotted (1) sheet metal. The slots (1) comprise e.g. rectangular openings with rounded angles, and are distributed in a staggered pattern. The slots may follow lines which are parallel with or obliquely angled to the longitudinal axis of the members concerned, or may be alternately parallel with or normal to any selected axis. The kinetic energy of an impacting vehicle may draw the perforated metal which deforms progressively to arrest the vehicle without rebound.</p> |
