The machine comprises a chassis which has a rearwards extending arm (1) carrying a standard convex disc (3) used for uprooting the sugar beet. This disc is vertical and inclined to the direction of the row (4). A guide blade (7) is mounted forward of this disc and is also inclined to direct roots (2) onto the latter. At the front, on the opposite side, is a vertically mounted concave disc (14, 15) which is adjusted to form a furrow. This furrowing action directs the roots onto the guide blade and loosens them for later uprooting without breakage.
