The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1101747/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 are C1- 4 alkyl groups and their preparation by (a) esterification of salicylic acid or a derivative thereof or (b) N-, O-, or simultaneous N- and O-acylation. p-Aminophenyl salicylate and its O-alkanoates are prepared by reaction of p-nitro-phenol with salicylic acid or an alkanoate thereof to form the p-nitrophenyl-ester, and subjecting this to catalytic hydrogenation. p-Acetylaminophenyl salicylate is prepared by acetylation. The compounds of the invention have analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration.
