Vinyl chloride is polymerized in bulk by a two-stage process carried out in one and the same apparatus, wherein part only of the monomer is subjected to a first stage of polymerization in a polymerizer with high-speed agitation until 7 to 15% by weight of the monomers initially charged have been converted, whereupon the remainder of the monomers is added to the reaction medium and polymerization is continued as a second stage with agitation at a low speed. A fast catalyst may be used in the first stage and a slow catalyst may be used in the second.
