The milling cutter is used to machine metals, having a cylindrical body (1) with axial grooves (2) defining teeth (3) which locate the demountable cutting bits (4). Each tooth has a tapered bore (5) which aligns tangential to the axis of body revolution, and which receives a shank (9) of a cutting bit (4). A uniformly wide groove (6) with a curved invert gives the tooth a 'U' shape when viewed in section on the plane contg. the bore axis (B), and the shank is locked in place by e.g. rivets (12, 13) engaging a circumferential shank barrel (9) groove (11). The bit may have an enlarged round head (4) with the cutting edge (4c) offset from the extremity (3c) of the tooth. The lateral faces (4b) of the cutting head may be smooth, may have axial teeth, or may have spiral teeth.
|
