<p>A flat seal (5) in the joint between the two flanges (1, 2) is enclosed by an outer ring (6). THe outer ring is made of a stronger material than the seal (5), eg it may be made of steel, and provides extra strength against bursting due to internal pressure. The outer ring (6) is thinner than the seal (5), to ensure that there is no interference with proper sealing contact between the latter and the faces (3, 4) of the flanges (1, 2). If the external dia of the ring (6) is such that it fits closely between the flange attachment bolts, this helps to locate the seal (5) correctly.</p> |
