The copolymers contain (1) 20-69.5% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid; (2) 0.5-25% by weight of monomer of the formula CH2=C(R)-C(O)-O-(CH2CH2O)n-R<0> wherein R is H or CH3, n is at least 2 and R<0> is C8-C30 alkyl, alkylaryl or polycyclic alkyl; (3) at least 30% by weight of at least one C1-C4 alkyl acrylate and/or methacrylate and (4) 0-0.1% by weight of polyethylenically unsaturated monomer, the total of (1), (2), (3) and (4) being 100%. Surfactants may be used to enhance the thickening effect of the copolymers. The copolymers, upon at least partial neutralization with alkali, are used to thicken aqueous systems such as paints, cosmetics, food preparations, ionic detergents, dye pastes for textiles, pharmaceuticals and oil well drilling muds. |
