Combustible gas is produced by biochemical decomposition of farmyard manure and other organic waste in a tank which is separated by a partition into a fermentation space and a collection space. An inclined endless chain with paddles extends with its input end in the upper part of the fermentation space to its output end in the lower part of the collection space. This breaks up the floating cover in the fermentation space which impedes the gas release. It removes the spent substances and results in a continuous operation.
