The apparent whitness for fabric is increased by application of up to 3 ppm. by wt. of the fabric, the mixture of blue dyes of different shades but the same substantivity with respect to the fabric, in aq. soln. of concn. 0.01-0.2 ppm and in a proportion of 1:5-5:1 this proportion being such that when the fabric is dried after treatment it has a slightly bluish tint which is more blue than the colour of the fabric washed in the absence of the dyestuffs mixtures. The dyestuff mixture is incorporated in amt. of 0.005-0.01% in a detergent compsn. which is used to wash the fabrics at a concn. of 0.05-1% in aq. medium, at 10-90 degrees C. The dyestuffs can be eliminated with an aq. sodium hypochloride soln. if excessive accumulation of brightener is undesirable.
