In a small-sized turbocharger, the scroll portion of a turbine casing 3 which is exposed to high temperature exhaust gases is made of ceramic material in order to improve its heat resisting properties. The scroll portion is formed of two parts 7, 8 which adjoin in a vertical plane, the scroll being encased within a metal casing comprising an outer shell 9 and an end plate 10. Connecting bolts are shown at 11, 12, 13. The ceramic material may be alumina. <IMAGE>
