Polymeric materials, in particular regenerated cellulose, which contain a pyrophosphoric tetraester and/or a dithionopyrophosphoric tetraester and/or a monothionopyrophosphoric tetraester in a concentration of preferably 5-35 per cent by weight are flameproof. They are produced by adding the phosphorus compound before, during or after polymer formation, which in the case of the regenerated cellulose means before, during or after precipitation from the cellulose solution.
