[Also in Division H1] A method of making coaxial cable comprises continually advancing a plastic foam insulated centre core conductor, progressively forming a sheath as a longitudinally seamed tube of larger inside diameter than the outer diameter of the core insulation, welding the seam, drawing down the sheath into contact with the core insulation, and pulling the cable continuously to keep the sheath and core advancing. The sheath 14 is formed around the core 10 in a forming die 16 and passes through a roll stand 30 to a welding station 32. A further roll stand 36 serves to damp any movement of the cable as it enters a sizing die 42 and holds it steady during welding. Lubricant is poured from a pipe 46 on to the sheath before it enters the die 42 and the cable 14a passes from the die to be wound helically over drums 52, 54, which are driven rotationally in a fixed frame 57. Alternatively the lubricant is cleared from the drawn cable 14a by a nozzle 74 and the cable is frictionally gripped between moving endless bands 66. The sheath is preferably of aluminium, but may be of copper. |
